I have been neglecting my poor little blog, so here is an update on me! I have been pretty buy the past few months, which has included moving back to Alaska from school, getting bucked off a horse and breaking my head on cement, getting a part-time job, being an awesome host, visiting my bf in Idaho, working on several 3D independent short films, doing several art tests, and working on my portfolio.

It is going great!
I interpreted a piece of concept art my own way, and I saw it as a run-down African poacher’s shack. My story is that this building is in the middle of the African bush where there is little water, which is why there is a well near the shack. The well has water pressure canister (for convenience), but if that were to break down, there is also a manual pump.
The building is made of scrap metal, and the awnings are a mixture of tarp and canvas. These materials were scavenged by the poacher, who put them to good use. He has been busy working, which is why there are hides and tusks by the building.
This was a lot of fun to do, man I love 3D.

After a year at a fantastic school, and countless hours happily slaving away on my reel, I am proud to announce that I have completed my 2011 student demo reel.
I feel like I really applied myself, and that I was able to learn a great deal in only one year. The work is not done though, I want to make my reel even stronger with a few more scenes.
Here it is! Click on the “Vimeo” icon to open it up in Vimeo.com, that way the resolution will be larger.

Wow, I’ve been away from my site for quite a while!

I’m still at school and close to demo reel completion! I have to finish within the next 3 weeks, because I’m moving back to the states. I should be done by then. My game scene only has a day or so left of work on it, and my high poly environment the same (NOT including render times, which will take a good while)

I’ve been working on a higher-poly environment, kind of a fun cartoon one. Here is the concept, done by Fydbac.deviantart.com, who was some lovely and clean-lined environment concepts. I decided to do a film-resolution scene for the hell of it, really! I love all of 3D, not just the gaming aspect.  After this, though, I will do another game piece to round off my game-focused demo reel.

And here is my current work in progress!

Still WIP, I need a bit longer to complete a few things :)

I’ve finally completed my birds, here are some snapshots of them from the Marmoset engine. This was a really good exercise for me! I did a lot of work and taught myself a lot, like retopologizing, using the marmoset engine, and a lot of “what not to do” when it comes to retopo geometry and UVs. If I had to do this whole exercise again, I guarantee I would be twice as fast at doing it.

So here are the birds! Now to complete my mini-scene…

I am modeling a huge robot battle dinosaur. Not just for the pleasure of doing so, but to also apply to a Maya mech rigging assignment we have coming up in the next few weeks. Any Zoids fans out there? I used to watch that show all the time after school when I was younger, this is a tribute to how awesome I think these mechs still are… gosh I’m such a nerd :D

This is the low-detail base mesh, which will be much cooler once I put more time and detail into it. Maybe if it turns out well I will make another kind of zoid and animate a kick-ass mech battle!

Gun sniper Zoid

Hello and welcome to my website, one that will soon be full of information on the VFX, gaming, and CG industry from a student’s perspective. I will talk in detail about the year-long school I attend and the process of learning modeling, animation and whatever the heck else I’ll need to master to be able to compete in the VFX/gaming industry. This website will soon house my DEMO REEL once I complete it during third semester.

About me!

My name is Taylor and I am attending Think Tank Training Centre in Vancouver, B.C. Think Tank is an amazing year-long school for those who want to not only learn CG, but to be proficient enough to be hired immediately out of school. Think Tank’s 90%+ employment rate is a reflection of just how good this school is. Their website can be found at http://www.tttc.ca. I will make another more in-depth post soon about Think Tank and its amazing-ness, including pictures of the really cool design and descriptions of what is taught in each semester.

I am currently in my second semester but I will talk about my first semester experience and include snapshots of assignments and projects. Join me as I progress through the program and prepare for a career in the VFX or gaming industry!
